An Accessible Bathroom for the Richards Family

The Richards family’s bathroom remodel on Elm Street was a highly specialized project focused on creating an accessible space for a wheelchair-bound family member. The goal was to design a zero-threshold walk-in shower and customize the bathroom layout to ensure ease of use, safety, and comfort. With a thoughtful design and carefully selected materials, EZ Bath delivered a functional yet elegant bathroom that perfectly met the family’s needs.

Zero-Threshold Shower: Accessibility and Elegance

To create a fully accessible space, we removed the existing bathtub and utilized the wet area to install a zero-threshold walk-in shower. This design allowed the customer to easily roll into the shower with a wheelchair, without any barriers. The shower floor was laid with 2 x 2 porcelain tiles for extra grip, ensuring safety and ease of movement. For the wall surround, we used beautiful 12 x 24 polished Crema Marfil porcelain tiles from Arizona Tile, which gave the shower a sleek, sophisticated look while maintaining the necessary functionality.

Custom Vanities: Tailored for Accessibility

We also addressed the need for accessible vanities. On the customer’s side, we installed a free-floating porcelain sink, allowing for easy roll-up access so he could comfortably wash his hands. On her side, we installed custom Bishop cabinets, providing ample storage and a traditional vanity space. In the area where the old shower once stood, we added two tall linen cabinets by Bishop, offering additional storage and contributing to the bathroom’s overall functionality.

Flooring: Seamless and Sophisticated

To maintain a cohesive and accessible design, we continued the use of 12 x 24 Crema Marfil porcelain tiles on the bathroom floor, but this time in a matte finish. The matte texture provided a non-slip surface, while the uniform design ensured the space felt open and elegant, complementing the entire bathroom remodel.

Unique Challenges: Custom Welded Bench

One unique aspect of this project was the installation of a custom bench in the shower. To ensure it was perfectly suited for the customer’s needs, we had a welder create a custom-built bench that fit seamlessly within the shower. This specialized piece was a standout feature, offering both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
